So many sci-fi stories seem to believe that humanity will only enter a true space age when we're united under one world government.
I believe this is false. I honestly think - if we ever do see a burst of space travel - it will be thanks to capitalism and economic competition between nations and (eventually) companies. Once space becomes profitable to a wide market, you can bet we'll get our butts up there one way or another.
At the very least, if I ever write stories set in a space age, that's exactly how I'll set up the world. So fascinating, yet rarely explored.
